Oprah and I are getting a Divorce

Oprah and I are getting a Divorce

Don’t get me wrong.  I love Oprah.  If she called tomorrow and said she wanted Island Contessa in her magazine, I’d say ‘yes’ before she finished her sentence.  But here’s the problem.  I’ve been perusing her magazine for some time.  She is obviously a very spiritual woman and someone who cares deeply about the environment.  Unfortunately she has been promoting an environmentally damaging thing under the guise of fashion (H&M, I’m looking at you).  Fast fashion has become synonymous with waste and bad labor practices.  What’s worse, is that purveyors of this, often make you, the consumer, feel bad for not buying into it.  We used to have two style seasons–spring/summer and fall/winter.  Now these stores have created 52 ‘micro seasons’ per year.  Yup, every week to them is a season.  Some of these stores introduce 400 styles A WEEK!  That’s obscene and if these designs have any embellishment–beading or sequins–it most likely was created under child labor.  Add to that the fact the garments are cheaply made–usually with synthetic, petroleum-based fibers–and the poor quality is more likely to make them fall apart and end up in land fills where it will take decades for them to decompose—you get the picture.

I was trying to pitch Island Contessa to a very high end catalog in May of this year for their 2017 catalog and they wanted my designs with pictures and pricing then!  I’m a small designer and I work very hard to create unique, quality made and fashionable pieces.  I have a yearly collection.  So what you see in January of each year is what will be available for the year.  I may add in one or two additional pieces but there won’t be something new every week.  Island Contessa uses 100% natural fibers–cotton, silk, hemp and bamboo–all environmentally friendly and all of the highest quality.  My clothes are manufactured in the US and I have met every stitcher who touches my garments. I recognize that not  every designer has that luxury but I’m proud to say I can.

I like a good deal as well as the next person but our desire for cheaper garments, ultimately comes at a price to all of us.  So, Oprah, if you’re reading this; consider my plea and stop rewarding brands that, in the end, hurt all of us!

Happy Friday,

Lori
